On my trip to the Oregon coast last Fall (October 2001), I was trying out my new Canon Rebel EOS. Actually, I’m still learning how to use it (it has extremely small digital buttons to change shutter speed, etc., yeck!). I also used the Canon 75-300mm zoom lens.
I was at Whaleshead Beach, it was windy that day, the waves were big (for Oregon), and there were three young surfers I was watching them waiting to catch a wave! I got brave and went right down to the shoreline and started clicking off shots. I shot a whole roll of Fuji 200 on the surfers! It was fun. I was getting wrapped up in it, waiting for them take on a big wave. I found a shelter behind a large rock formation and got so involved I didn’t “see” the sleeper wave that snuck up on me and soaked me up to my knees just as I clicked off the last shot! I screamed and held my camera over my head and ran back inland.
I approached one of the surfers and chatted with him. I gave him one of my business cards and told him to call me. If the pictures turned out I said I would send them copies. I never heard from them … until just this month (August 2002). What a fun surprise! (I love meeting people!) He called and said he had finally found my business card! So we chatted, I got his address and I enlarged a few of the photos and sent him the set. The pictures came out fairly good. If I had known I would be taking pictures of surfers, I could have used a faster film and stronger zoom lens. But hey, check them out for yourself!
