OREGON - So. Coast - BLACK & WHITE
Excerpt from my travel journal: “The first day of our trip with my friend Sheila we drove up I-5 to Grants Pass. Putting in CDs of Blood, Sweat & Tears, Joe Cocker, The Eagles and singing our little hearts out. Not a worry until we turned the radio on. October 7, 2001 it came over loud and clear, the United States started bombing the Taliban’s known training and military base sites. After listening to this news solemnly, as I knew it (retaliation) was inevitable, just didn’t want it to happen on this day of a great, awaited adventure. I turned off the radio. I turned and asked Sheila if she wanted to go home. She only hesitated for a moment and then said, “no”. I know “I” wanted to continue with our trip, but at the same time I would have turned around if she had said the word.” Yes, this was a long, awaited trip and it was going to be an adventure. Just me and Sheila, driving in her newly acquired ’78 VW Westfalia van. I’d never had the opportunity when I was young to be crazy and wild and drive carefree across the country, and neither had Sheila. So off we went. Our goal was to drive up the Oregon coast…in a week! Hah! We only made it halfway up the coast, the farthest point being Reedsport. These photos will take you through Brookings, Bandon, Coos Bay and Reedsport. Enjoy!

Seven Devils
It was totally pouring that day. We drove down to Seven Devils Beach on a tip from another traveler. I was going crazy running around down at the beach, clicking off shots, hiding my Minolta from the rain under my jacket. This shot is very similar to one taken by Ansel Adams (Birds on the Beach) that I had no knowledge of until later.
Seven Devils Wash
The freshwater meets the ocean at Seven Devils. I was fascinated by the choppy, broken edges made by the freshwater. The really nice touch to this day was when I was done taking photos, Sheila had hot chocolate waiting for me in the van!!
Bullards Beach Prints
This was a fantastic morning! I got up early and went walking along the bluff and then down on the beach. A dog had gone on an even earlier stroll than me!! The shadows and meandering paw prints were magic
Marine Layer & Early Sun
All I can say, is you had to have been there. The marine layer was just burning off as the sun’s rays cast their light on the big jelly-like wave coming in to shore.
Boat Reflections
This was the first time I’d been around docks of any kind with my camera in hand. I went wild! I’m definitely going to have to go in search of more docks! This particular shot was taken at Coos Bay.
Boat Bumpers
I found another haven of beauties at Reedsport docks at sunset.
Reedsport Docks
This one pretty much speaks for itself. I just happened to be at the docks at the right time. It was very still and the sun was just setting.
Antique Shop
This is one of my personal favorites. I call it a study in light. In North Bend we went into town and found this great antique shop! I wandered into the back room. The light was shining in at an angle, streaming thru the windows and bouncing off the antique bottles and other memorabilia. Click!
