I have had the good fortune to travel to Hawaii nine times. And nine times I clicked off color photos, because that's what Hawaii is all about: color, glorious sunsets, blue skies, green palms, fronds, lush pineapple plantations and more.
My nephew planted the idea in my head when he put in his request for, “a palm tree and sunset in B&W”. That thought stayed with me. Since I’d been shooting B&W for a year or so, I gave myself a mission. Go to Hawaii on this 10th tour and shoot only B&W. The thought was almost sacrilegious to me. But I did it and I was completely flabbergasted at the results!
All photos were taken with my Minolta SRT201, using Kodak 400 TMAX film.

Sunset Surfers
Just because the sun goes down in Hawaii, doesn’t mean it’s time for everyone to get out of the water! Note the surfers with their boards in front of the palm trees. |

Lifeguard Station
At sunset everyone finds a spot and sits and they just……wait! What a great pastime. Nothing to do but to be mesmerized by the sun, the water, the breeze, and practicing the art of “just being there”. |

Sailboat & Sunset
Usually this is a great shot in color. But I’m just as pleased if not more with this one in B&W. |

Palms & Balcony
I found the contrast of the palms against the hotel to be quite striking. The straightness of the tall palm parallel to the lines in the building against the waving balconies. I was told that the balconies were created to resemble the waves of the oceanfront. |

Star Palm
I shot this one walking thru Ala Moana Park west of Waikiki Beach. You can almost feel the palm tree swaying, as it fills up the center of the frame. The wind was blowing so I increased the shutter speed from 250 to 500. It worked. |

Sky Palm
I named this one Sky Palm because that’s just what it was doing - reaching for the sky! Not to forget to mention that the clouds in the islands are to die for! The white clouds added to the depth of a great contrast with the palms. |

Banyon Roots
If you’ve never seen a Banyon tree, they are something to behold. The sun was setting, and the shadows in the roots caught my eye, as well as the varied shades of gray. |

Waikiki Grill
Have you been to the International Market Place in Waikiki? Well, that’s where I ‘found’ this grill piece. I was walking thru a hallway and actually passed it, and made a quick U-turn. The light was streaming thru the window opening behind the grill and there was another windowpane in front. I shot this thru the dirty glass pane. I framed this one in a two-toned gray mat and brushed silver frame -- just for me and it looks fabulous! |
